Outformations: From Independent to Incorporated

Outformations Inc. grew out of a community of independent developers. From 1989-1995, we worked together informally and formally on a wide variety of projects. As each of us built our own solid reputation, our clients trusted us with more interesting, complex and challenging work. As a result, we found ourselves needing more resources. We all pitched in to buy a server. We bought community software subscriptions. We rented shared office space.

Over time, we realized that though we did have some overlapping skills, we also had significant differences in our specialties. We started pitching and taking more work together, working as a team more often than individually.

In 1995, we crossed a threshold, and made the leap from being a loose collection of independent consultants to becoming an incorporated cooperative business. We’ve maintained this collaborative culture in that whenever we meet talented independent developers, we add them to our ever-expanding pool of experts. That allows us to assemble the ideal team for each project.

Building this business, we learned that our most successful ventures resulted from working together. To this day, we emphasize collaboration in everything we do: within our teams at Outformations, with our clients’ organizations, and in how we combine different tools and technology to build lasting, valuable solutions.
